FAQ

BIS Certification Cost, Answered

What goes into the cost of a BIS licence or registration.

How much does BIS certification cost in India?

For an Indian manufacturer, an ISI licence for one product variant typically costs ₹45,000 to ₹1,50,000 including GST: BIS application, inspection and licence fees, lab testing and the first year's minimum marking fee. CRS registration for one electronics model costs about ₹55,000 to ₹1,20,000. Consultant fees are extra if you use one.

What is the BIS fee for CRS registration?

BIS charges a ₹1,000 application fee, a ₹50,000 processing fee for the two-year registration (including one test report) and a ₹2,000 registration fee. Lab testing is paid separately to the BIS-recognised laboratory, and each additional model in a series adds a processing fee.

How much does BIS certification cost for a foreign manufacturer?

A foreign manufacturer under FMCS should budget ₹3,50,000 to ₹9,00,000 for one variant, including a USD 10,000 Performance Bank Guarantee that is returned when the licence ends, BIS officers' travel for the factory audit and an Authorised Indian Representative.

Do MSMEs pay a lower BIS fee?

Yes. Micro units and startups get 80% off the annual minimum marking fee, small units 50% and medium units 20%, for units registered in India. Women-led enterprises and units in the North-East get a further concession.

How long does BIS certification take?

An ISI licence for an Indian factory usually takes 8 to 12 weeks, and 4 to 6 weeks on fast-track under the simplified procedure. Foreign factories take 12 to 24 weeks. CRS registration takes 3 to 6 weeks.

Who pays for BIS certification: the importer or the manufacturer?

BIS issues the licence or registration to the manufacturer, in India or abroad, never to an importer or seller. In practice importers and brand owners often fund their supplier's certification, because customs and marketplaces will not accept uncertified goods.

How accurate is this BIS cost estimate?

Government fees follow the BIS fee schedule. Testing, marking and consultant fees are typical ranges for the product and vary with the laboratory, the grouping of your variants and the Indian Standard. For an exact figure, ask an expert for a quotation.
