- Traders, sellers and distributors
How to Comply
Covered products are certified under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS, Scheme-II). These are the standard steps.
- 1
Confirm the standard and models
Check the Indian Standard that applies and group the models or variants you want to register, following BIS's grouping guidelines for the product.
- 2
Test at a BIS-recognised laboratory
Send samples to a laboratory recognised by BIS for that Indian Standard and get a test report showing the product conforms.
- 3
Apply on the BIS CRS portal
Submit the registration application with the test report, factory and brand details and pay the fees. Foreign manufacturers also appoint an Authorised Indian Representative.
- 4
Registration granted
BIS reviews the application and test report and grants a registration number (R-number) for the registered models.
- 5
Mark the product and keep it current
Print the Standard Mark with the R-number on the product and packaging, keep the registration renewed, and register new models before they are sold.
Penalty for Non-Compliance
Fine of at least ₹2 lakh, or imprisonment of up to 2 years
Contravening a Quality Control Order is punishable under section 29 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
