FAQ

BIS Testing Labs, Answered

What recognition means and how to pick the right laboratory.

What is a BIS-recognised testing laboratory?

A BIS-recognised laboratory is one the Bureau of Indian Standards has recognised to test products against specific Indian Standards. Test reports from these labs are used for BIS certification (ISI mark) and CRS registration, so the lab must be recognised for your product's IS number.

How do I choose the right lab for my product?

First confirm the lab's recognised scope covers your product's Indian Standard (IS number), then compare location, turnaround time and fees. Scope is listed per standard, so a lab recognised for one electrical product is not automatically recognised for another.

Is a government lab better than a private one?

No. What matters is recognition for your standard, not ownership. BIS-recognised private and government laboratories can both test products for BIS certification and CRS registration.

What does “recognition valid until” mean?

BIS recognition is granted for a fixed period. Check that a lab's recognition is valid on the date your samples are tested, and confirm its current scope with the lab before sending samples.
